The Canary Islands, Madeira and the Azores prepare for a revitalisation of tourism with Innovatur

The Innovatur tourism modernisation project is starting with the destinations of Puerto de la Cruz, Los Cristianos, Funchal and Terceira Island, with a focus on accommodation and commercial companies

Albert Einstein said that “if you’re looking for different results, don’t always do the same thing”. Starting from this premise, the Island Council of Tenerife, the Society for Promotion of Tenerife Abroad (SPET Turismo de Tenerife), and the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Madeira and Angra de Heroísmo held a meeting on 25 and 26 May to kick-off the Innovatur project for revitalisation of these tourist destinations. The initiative is part of the MAC 2014-2020 cooperation programme, which in turn is part of the Regional Development Fund of the European Union INTERREG. It aims to make revitalisation of the accommodation and commercial offering part of daily business in these tourism areas. The aim is to move away from the vicious circle of decreasing tourist value which is a situation common to the project’s participating islands of Madeira, the Azores and the Canaries.

The initiative is led by the Society for the Promotion of Tenerife, which hosted the Innovatur kick-off meeting at its headquarters. The meeting addressed the general and specific objectives of the tourism modernisation plan, its main beneficiaries and its scope, as well as the activities to be carried out in the four selected intervention areas: the town of Los Cristianos (Arona, Tenerife), Puerto de la Cruz (Tenerife), Funchal (the capital of Madeira) and Terceira (Azores). After this project kick-off meeting, the partners presented Innovatur to the Canary Islands’ media and then moved on to Puerto de la Cruz where they made a tour of the spaces that could benefit from this commitment to the revitalization of tourism in these islands.
